Gathering Hosts

Thanks to support from the Lake Michigan Shorelands Alliance, Gathering Waters Conservancy, and the Joyce Foundation, four Great Lake Gatherings will be held in the Fall of 2008 in the Lake Michigan Basin communities of Green Bay, Sheboygan, Mequon, and Milwaukee.

Lake Michigan Shorelands Alliance
The Lake Michigan Shorelands Alliance (LMSA) is a collaborative group of land trusts working to protect critical land and water resources in the Lake Michigan Basin. LMSA was formed in 2003 and has undertaken strategic conservation planning for the Lake Michigan Basin watershed region. The Alliance has identified eighteen Priority Conservation Sites, four of which will be the focus of the Great Lake Gatherings.

Alliance members:
Caledonia Conservancy
Door County Land Trust
Gathering Waters Conservancy
Glacial Lakes Conservancy
Kenosha Racine Land Trust
Milwaukee Area Land Conservancy
Northeast Wisconsin Land Trust
Ozaukee Washington Land Trust
River Revitalization Foundation
The Nature Conservancy of Wisconsin

Gathering Waters Conservancy
Gathering Waters Conservancy is a statewide service center for Wisconsin’s land trust community, and works to help communities, land trusts and landowners protect the places that make Wisconsin special. Gathering Waters’ goal is to increase the amount of protected land in the state through private voluntary action and build the capacity of the state’s private, non-profit conservation organizations through consulting, public education, and policy advocacy. The Great Lake Gatherings are just one of the Conservancy’s conservation initiatives.

The Joyce Foundation
The Joyce Foundation was established in 1948 by Beatrice Joyce Kean of Chicago. Joyce supports efforts to protect the natural environment of the Great Lakes, to reduce poverty and violence in the region, and to ensure that its people have access to good schools, decent jobs, and a diverse and thriving culture.

Joyce has funded citizen and environmental groups around the Great Lakes, both in the U.S. and Canada, that provided critical input for two keystone agreements released in 2005: one on protecting the Great Lakes from pollution, invasive species, and other threats; the second on conserving Great Lakes water. Over the years Joyce has made grants of more than $600 million to groups working to improve the quality of life in the Great Lakes region. The Joyce Foundation is generously supporting The Great Lake Gatherings initiative and the work of the Alliance member land trusts.
