The Baird Creek
Preservation Foundation, Northeast Wisconsin Land Trust and Gathering
Waters Conservancy invite you to join us on September 16th for
the Green
Bay Great Lake Gathering. The Gathering will be from
8am to 12pm at the University of Wisconsin-Green
Bay.
Everyone who shares
a common love for the natural treasures in the Lake Michigan basin
is encouraged to attend: business
owners, elected officials, landowners, economic development organizations,
conservation groups, chambers of commerce, community organization
members, and the general public. The Great Lake Gathering will introduce
participants to new partners who are working to protect that
treasure in our shared back yard.

Speakers
Mayor Jim Schmitt - On April
1, 2003, Jim Schmitt became the 41st Mayor of the City of Green
Bay, and was recently re-elected to a second four-year term as
Mayor of Green Bay on April 3, 2007, winning with 70% of the vote. Under
Mayor Schmitt’s leadership, Green Bay has seen a dramatic
economic revitalization of its riverfront, including Riverfront
Lofts, Baylake Bank City Center, Nicolet Bank Building, Leicht
Memorial Park, Festival Grounds, the new City Deck and upcoming
construction of River Center.
In addition, Mayor Schmitt formed the Sustainable
Green Bay Initiative, which is a collaboration of business leaders,
government officials, non-profit organizations and citizens committed
to making Green Bay a more vibrant, resource-efficient and sustainable
community. Sustainable
Green Bay is dedicated to planning and implementing action in environmental
and educational programs that strengthen our economy, ecology and
community culture for all people of today and future generations.

G. Tracy Mehan III, an attorney
who has worked on natural resources and environmental issues for
almost 20 years. He is a principal in the consulting firm
The Cadmus Group, and served as Assistant Administrator for
Water at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and as director
of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Michigan
Office of the Great Lakes. He is a member of the Environmental
Law Institute, the Water Environment Federation, and the Potomac
Conservancy. Mr. Mehan also is an Adjunct Professor of Environmental
Law at George Mason University School of Law.

Mike Grimm is a Conservation Ecologist with The
Nature Conservancy in Wisconsin. The Nature
Conservancy is a leading conservation organization working around
the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for
nature and people. In Wisconsin, the Conservancy has helped conserve
more than 140,000 acres since 1960. The Conservancy has more than
21,000 members in Wisconsin and offices in Madison, Baraboo, East
Troy, Minocqua and Sturgeon Bay.
Steve Lambert is Past President
of the Baird Creek Preservation Foundation (BCPF), a non-profit
501c3 conservation organization. The goal of The Foundation is
to preserve approximately 500 acres of woodland in the Green Bay
metropolitan area. BCPF assists the City of Green Bay in acquiring
land in the Baird Creek Parkway, and advancing the Parkway’s
value as an ecological, recreational, and educational resource
for Northeast Wisconsin.
Milly Rugland is an Emeritus
Director of the Northeast Wisconsin Land Trust (NEWLT). The Northeast
Wisconsin Land Trust serves 11 counties and works with landowners,
other organizations, WI DNR, municipalities and businesses to protect
land to conserve the natural heritage of northeast Wisconsin’s
land and waters.
New North Representative -
New North, Inc. is a consortium of business, economic development,
chambers of commerce, workforce development, civic, non-profit,
and education leaders in 18 counties of Northeast Wisconsin who
are working to be recognized as competitive for job growth while
maintaining our superior quality of life.

one in a series of open forums this fall in four Wisconsin communities:
Green Bay, Sheboygan, Mequon and Milwaukee.
Land trusts play an important role in preserving
and improving the ecological, economic and human health in the
area. One goal of the Gatherings is to encourage community leaders
to look to their land trusts as a resource.
