Ken Aldridge has loved the Northwoods of Wisconsin ever since he was a child. So when the Libertyville resident learned that a favorite wilderness refuge near Minocqua was threatened by development, he decided to act. In June 2010, Aldridge and his wife, Carolyn, purchased nearly 3,200 acres of land near the Minocqua Winter Park, located south of Minocqua off of Highway 70, for $4.5 million. In December, the Aldridges completed one of the largest conservation easement donations in Wisconsin history to the Northwoods Land Trust, a non-profit land conservation group based in Eagle River, Wis., which will preserve the land in its natural state in perpetuity.

The Ride for Nature, formerly called the Ridges Ride, is set for June 16 of this year. Registration for this event will open Sunday.

The event will mark the 24th annual bike ride to benefit The Ridges Sanctuary in Baileys Harbor. Proceeds from the ride will help the organization to continue its educational programming as it celebrates its 75th anniversary and embarks upon a campaign to raise funds for a new interpretive center.

New for this year's ride will be a metric century distance (62 miles), which will be added to the existing 100-mile, 50-mile, 25-mile and the 15-mile family ride. Each of the routes will begin and end at the Baileys Harbor Town Hall.

Support services and rest stops will be provided along each of the routes. Food, beverages and music at the Town Hall will wrap up the days events. The Ride for Nature is organized by the Peninsula Pacers.

The agreements with the Joseph Binard family, owners of both properties, will preserve the land’s scenic and rural character far into the future, according to the announcement.

Snowshoeing is a great way to explore Door County in winter, and burn off some of those extra holiday calories. Starting on January 6, The Ridges Sanctuary in Baileys Harbor will sponsor weekly guided Snowshoe Hikes. Each Friday and Saturday in January and February, you can join a Ridges naturalist to explore the Sanctuary trails and learn about winter ecology and wildlife. Snowshoe hikes begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Ridges’ Marshall Cabin (8288 Hwy Q, Baileys Harbor). The hikes last about 90 minutes, and are geared toward beginning to intermediate snowshoers. Some loaner snowshoes are available; call ahead to reserve. If there is insufficient snow, we will hike without snowshoes. Cost is $5 for those with their own snowshoes, or $10 if using Ridges snowshoes. Children under 18 are free. Call the Ridges office at (920) 839-2802 for more information.

Bill to Open State Parks to Hunting and Trapping Moves to the Senate

An amendment to the “Sportsman Heritage Bill” headed to the Senate would open all 48 state parks to hunting and trapping, unless the Department of Natural Resources Board voted to close a park or portions of it. It reverses the current management practice: state parks are closed to hunting unless the DNR board acts to open them for such activities.

According to Dan Burke, executive director of the Door County Land Trust (DCLT), the national rate of growth was matched and surpassed on a local level.

“Since 2005, the number of acres permanently protected by the Door County Land Trust has increased by over 50 percent,” Burke said.
