Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Fund

Gathering Waters Conservancy proudly reports a great conservation victory -- the 2007 reauthorization of the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Fund.

The Stewardship Fund helps acquire land for recreation, wildlife habitat, natural areas and water quality in Wisconsin. Stewardship money has protected more than 475,000 acres across the state. Yet, in 2007, some lawmakers argued that Stewardship was a luxury we could not afford.

Gathering Waters Conservancy led a resounding, successful grassroots campaign to keep the Stewardship Fund vital. In spite of contentious debate, the 2007 state budget extends the Stewardship Fund through 2020 and increases funding by 40%.

Celebrating Stewardship

"I like to think that a great blue heron is like a work of art: everyone values it for a different reason. And if we're lucky, this valuable thing settles into our lives and becomes indispensable." Read the full story by Lisa Peters in Prehistoric Neighbors »
