The Knowles-Nelson Stewardship
Fund is the state's land acquisition fund, a portion of which is available as grants to local governments and non-profit organizations to help acquire land for recreation, wildlife habitat, natural areas and water quality in Wisconsin. Stewardship
money has protected more than 500,000 acres across the state.
In 2007, Gathering Waters
Conservancy led a resounding, successful grassroots campaign to see Stewardship reauthorized. In spite of contentious debate,
the 2007 state budget extended the Stewardship Fund through 2020 and increased
funding by 40%.
