 Land Policy + Legislation

Tips for writing your Legislators

• Make your communication as personal as possible. Letters sent through the mail are the best. Email should only be used as a last resort.

• If you have any personal relationship with your legislator, mention it ("Nice to meet you at Rotary last week", "Uncle Bill sends his regards", "I understand that Jimmy and Suzy are in the same class this year", etc.)

• Tell personal stories from the heart about why Stewardship is important to you rather than focusing too heavily on facts and figures.

• Give them a map of Stewardship projects in your area.

• Share a couple of pictures of Stewardship projects, especially photos with people in them.

• Key in on Legislators interests (hunting, fishing, photography, farming, etc.) You can learn a lot about legislators by visiting their personal home pages at www.legis.state.wi.us.

• If you have information on the economic benefits of local Stewardship projects (e.g. the project protects a critical trout stream that draws 1000s of visitors each year), use it. Emphasize the Stewardship is an investment.

• Mention that you would like to meet personally with your Legislator, perhaps for a tour of Stewardship projects in their district.

Gathering Waters also has information on Stewardship-protected land in each legislative district that is available by emailing carlson [at] gatheringwaters.org.

If you have any questions or need extra assistance, please contact Vicki Elkin at 608-251-9131 or stewardship [at] gatheringwaters.org.
