Wisconsin State programs that support conservation
management:
Farmland Preservation
Program(Chapter 91, Wis. Stats.):
The Farmland
Preservation Program provides state income tax credits to farmers
who meet the program's requirements, soil and water conservation
standards, and agree to use the land for agriculture only. Administered
through the state Deptartment of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer
Protection.
Lake Planning Grants:
These Funds
are available to collect and analyze information needed to protect
and restore lakes and their watersheds. Counties, towns, cities,
villages, non-profit groups and qualified lake associations, and
public inland lake protection and rehabilitation districts are eligible
to apply.
Managed Forest Law
(Wis. Stat. Secs. 77.80 – 77.91): The Managed
Forest Law is a landowner incentive program to encourage sustainable
forestry on private forests in Wisconsin. Landowners enroll in the
program for either 25 or 50 years, and must comply with a management
plan prepared for the land. In return, landowners pay an acreage
share tax in place of regular property tax. The state DNR administers
this program.
River Planning Grants:
River
Planning grants provide state cost sharing assistance for the
collection, assessment and dissemination of information on riverine
ecosystems, to help manage rivers, to promote public understanding
riverine ecosystems and to create management plans for the long
term protection and improvement of riverine ecosystems. Counties,
towns, cities, villages, non-profit groups and qualified river management
organizations can apply.
Federal programs that support conservation management:
Conservation
Reserve Program: The
Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is administered by the
USDA. Under the CRP, participants voluntarily remove environmentally
sensitive land from agricultural production by entering into
long-term contracts for 10 to 15 years. In exchange, participants
receive annual rental payments and a payment of up to 50 percent
of the cost of establishing conservation practices.
Conservation Reserve
Enhancement Program: The Conservation
Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) is a voluntary, joint,
state-federal program providing financial incentive to farmers
who enroll in contracts to remove lands from agricultural production.
The two primary objectives of CREP are: to coordinate federal
and non-federal resources to address specific conservation objectives,
and to improve water quality, erosion control, and wildlife
habitat.
Partners for
Fish and Wildlife: The Partners
for Fish and Wildlife (PFW) program works one-on-one with
private landowners to improve respective fish and wildlife habitats.
Wetlands Reserve
Program:The Wetlands
Reserve Program provides wetland conservation assistance
through long-term easements and restoration agreements.
