Gathering Waters Conservancy advocates at all levels of government in Wisconsin to ensure that policies reflect the conservation values of its citizens. We advocate for legislation that promotes private land conservation and work with government agencies to implement programs that support Wisconsin's land trusts.
Gathering Waters has long been a champion for Wisconsin's Warren Knowles-Gaylord Nelson Stewardship Program.
The Working Lands Initiative was adopted by the State Legislature in June, 2009 to preserve Wisconsin farmland for future generations.
Several federal programs have a direct influence on the work of land trusts and private land conservation in Wisconsin, creating incentives for land owners and important matching funds for land protection deals.
Since Gathering Waters Conservancy was founded in 1994, the growth in size and scope of the land trust community has been remarkable. It is reflected not only in the land trust community’s on-the-ground conservation successes, but also in the need and urgency of advocacy work to promote public policies that make these successes possible.
