We at Gathering Waters Conservancy have a unique opportunity
for you to help spread the word about why the preservation of Wisconsin’s
natural areas is important to you! This summer, you can participate
in our new project—a booklet containing stories, photos, and
personal narratives about how people in Wisconsin are connecting
to lands that have been preserved with the help of the Knowles-Nelson
Stewardship Fund. We will be printing and distributing thousands
of copies of this booklet, so it is a great chance for you to help
us support the Stewardship Fund and conservation efforts statewide.
You may have seen our 2003 publication, In
Their Own Words, which featured the personal stories of landowners
from around the state who have placed conservation easements on
their property. In Their Own Words generated terrific feedback
and even sparked a series of magazine articles and TV features.
As we continue our work promoting the Stewardship Fund, we are revisiting
this storytelling model with our new booklet—Stories of Stewardship: Tales from Wisconsin’s Big Backyard. This
time, we are looking for stories not just from conservation landowners,
but from anyone who has a strong connection with Stewardship lands.
Our vision for this project is that any Wisconsinite
– biker or birder, hiker or hunter – should be able
to read through our collection of Stewardship stories and find at
least one that he or she can truly connect with. We want everyone
to know where Stewardship is at work in their own backyards, whether
they look out on the Milwaukee cityscape or the shores of Lake Superior.
Readers should see that Stewardship makes the outdoor activities
they enjoy possible. Even more, we want people to feel strongly
that continued Stewardship is necessary to protect the places in
Wisconsin that make us proud to call it home.
We are asking for help from you, because as someone
who understands the important role of natural places in our lives,
you are among the best advocates for the success of Stewardship.
By contributing your unique story about your favorite Stewardship
place, you can help ensure that future generations will one day
have great Stewardship stories of their own!
