Milwaukee County Conservation Coalition
The mission of the Milwaukee County Conservation
Coalition (MC3) is to serve as an alliance for organizations and
individuals working to protect land and water in Milwaukee County.
MC3 recognizes our urban community’s
fundamental dependence upon the vitality of our natural resources.
One of the most effective ways to accomplish natural area, open
space, and water quality and quantity protection is to build strong
coalitions that can advocate for additional public resources while
bringing other interested players to the table. The coalition works
to promote a common advocacy agenda and facilitates networking,
strategy development and skill-building. We strive to ensure the
future quality of life and economic health of Milwaukee County.
In a quickly growing metropolitan area, it is
often difficult for one individual organization or interest group
to have the impact it wishes to have. However, if interests band
together forming stronger partnerships, their collective influence
may allow all the participants to achieve their missions. Therefore,
the participants of MC3 came together with the confidence that
working together would increase their capacity to impact policy
and funding decisions and, ultimately, to achieve on-the-ground
conservation success.
MC3
will foster collaborations which lead to the protection, restoration,
and enhancement of natural areas, open space, and the waters that
affect them within Milwaukee County. Activities include protection
of natural areas identified in the 1997 Southeastern Wisconsin
Regional Planning Commission (SEWRPC) Natural Areas Plan, advocacy
for more local and county financial resources for natural resource
protection, and supporting coalition partners’ open space
goals and projects.
Each member organization
retains a separate identity, mission, budget, and staff, but all
agree to share information, meet regularly, and participate in
the development of coordinated advocacy strategies.
MC3 members communicate and participate in group
decision making through our
listserve and at our monthly meetings. Membership is open to
both organizations and individuals. It costs nothing to join the
coalition beyond a commitment of support in terms of assistance—which
may include technical expertise, financial support, volunteers,
staff time, letter writing, publicity, or implementing projects
supported by the Coalition. MC3 relies on funding from grants,
local foundations, and is in the process of forming a membership
and individual giving campaign.
Monthly Meetings take place the fourth Tuesday
of every month at 7 p.m. at the Milwaukee
Environmental Consortium located at 1845 North Farwell Avenue Suite 100 in Milwaukee.
