Land Trust of the Year-- The Kinnickinnic River Land Trust
For the past 15 years the Kinnickinnic River Land Trust has worked to protect nearly 2,100 acres of critical lands within the Kinnickinnic River Watershed in pursuit of their mission to preserve the health and beauty of that western Wisconsin river. This year, KRLT became the first land trust in Wisconsin to be accredited by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission. The accreditation application and review process is no small task for an organization with just three paid staff. Staff and board also made time last year to close key conservation deals. Our hats are off and glasses raised to the "Kinni River" crew!
Policy Maker of the Year--Richard Stadelman
As the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Towns Association since 1987, Richard Stadelman has become one of Wisconsin’s most trusted and influential voices in land use policy. He has long championed the role of town governments in achieving sound land use planning. Rick served DATCP Secretary Nilsestuen on the Steering Committee for the Working Lands Initiative. To help see the tenants of that initiative through, last year The Towns Association sponsored numerous workshops on the Working Lands Initiative throughout Wisconsin. On June 29, the Initiative was signed into law. His efforts have been a crucial asset and key to the success of this program.
Conservationist of the Year--Lynde B. Uihlein
Lynde Uihlein has been on the forefront of the natural resource protection movement in Wisconsin. As the president and founder of The Brico Fund, she has invested her passion and resources in public policies that conserve water, land and sustainable food systems. Lynde has gone above and beyond merely supporting groups like the River Revitalization Foundation, Ozaukee Washington Land Trust and Organic and Sustainable Education Service: because of her investment, these organizations have become leading forces for conservation in southeastern Wisconsin. Her leadership has fostered a growing awareness within Milwaukee’s business community and among policy makers of the importance of preserving water quality and agricultural resources, especially.
Harold “Bud” Jordahl Award—Ben Logan, Paul and Kathy Fairchild & Peter Annin
We humbly grant this year’s Jordahl Lifetime Achievement Award to four individuals whose relationships and personal land ethics led to the permanent protection of Seldom Seen Farm, setting of Ben Logan’s book, The Land Remembers. Earlier this year, Logan donated a conservation easement on the farm that will keep it available for farming forever and fulfill his own hope to see the landscape of his childhood preserved. His gift was made possible because of the generous commitment of Paul and Kathy Fairchild, and fellow Wisconsin author Peter Annin. Come hear their story and toast the future of an iconic Driftless area farm.
